I live near the beach. Everyday that i walk or drive through my town (meaning i actually leave my computer. Gasp!), i get to see gorgeous men playing volleyball and basketball on the sand, gorgeous life guards doing their duty, surfers, bicyclists, runners, and all the other accouterments of the beach town. Who could resist writing about them? One of my favorite beach writing experiences was creating an underwater hanky panky scene for my book, Beach Balls. I sat at my computer, holding my breath and making all kinds of wild gestures to determine if you can really do THAT underwater.

Just for fun, here's that scene. ADULTS only, please.

Excerpt Adult : Beach Balls by Tara Lain; MM Contemporary
Available  from Amazon, ARe

Adam James is so far in the closet he could find Narnia. But coming out would threaten all he’s built as the lead attorney for WMA Development, and the million dollars he can get when he finishes pushing  a big land remediation project through the City Council. Then on an early morning scuba dive, Adam meets a tall, lean rebreather diver named Sky who makes him want to live a different life. But Adam’s dreams are shattered when he walks into the council meeting and finds the fire-breathing environmentalist who’s screwing up  his chances of winning is none other than that same beautiful man. Sky Sea Mickeljohn doesn’t compromise, so how could he find himself lusting after a damned developer? And what happens when somebody open’s Adam’s closet door? These two better start telling the truth if they’re ever going to find world peace.

He swam to Sky and extended a hand. Sky shied a little, but Adam kept coming and passed his fingers through Sky’s curls floating freely in the water like an underwater flower. Sky looked up at Adam’s hand.

He touched Sky’s cheek. For a moment, Sky was still.

He pressed his cheek against Adam’s palm.

Oh, yes. That constituted a welcome.

Adam pulled his mouthpiece out and held his breath. He tapped on Sky’s mouthpiece. Sky frowned.
Just kiss me, you idiot. Adam pointed at his mouth, stuck his mouthpiece back in for some air then took it out again. Sky smiled around his mouthpiece, removed it, and leaned toward Adam.

He pressed his lips against Sky’s. Warm and cool at the same time. Sky opened his mouth and licked along Adam’s lips. Nice. Adam turned his head to the side, grabbed a hit of air, and then came back in and pushed his tongue into Sky’s mouth.

A moment later, they pulled away for a breath of air. Adam sank down to his knees. Come to Daddy… He took hold of Sky’s tight shorts and yanked. The big cock was happy to see him. He breathed deeply through his mouthpiece once, twice, three times. Mouthpiece out, cock in.

Oh, yeah. This was easier than kissing. Who knew you could suck and lick while holding your breath?

Sky started bobbing like a crazy man, shoving that cock deeper. Adam took a breath then went back to work running his tongue over the glans as he sucked. The taste of salt and feel of silk filled his mouth.

Another breath, then he worked the mushroom head in and out of his lips like a candy pop. His hands began to pump, and he sucked until his cheeks tingled.. Sky’s hips pumped in slow motion, pressing his cock into
Adam’s mouth along with the tang of the sea. It gave a whole new meaning to the term “deep throat.” Adam sucked as much as he could without swallowing water and could hear the echoes of Sky “shouting” around his mouthpiece.

Sky’s body began to thrash. One big thrust, and Adam tasted cum and saltwater at the same time. Thick jism floated out of his mouth. Son of a bitch. He had the best of Sky and sea.

There Was a Young Man from Charleston! The Lover's Limerick

Hi everyone--
Awhile back, i was asked to write a poem about my recent release, Hearts and Flour. I created this limerick which i thought i'd share with you.

Limerick: A Young Man from Charleston

Here’s to a young lover named Quentin,
Who’s a sweetie we do want to mention,
He was born in the south, well I say shut my mouth,
And his bakery gets lots of attention.

When Quentin met Micah one day,
The two hit it off right away,
But a nasty ex-lover
Was soon to discover
Quentin never told grandma he’s gay!

The path of true love is not smooth
Since Micah loves only raw food.
 Quentin loves to express
By wearing a dress.
Will these two ever get in the mood?

When it looks like the plot will turn crappily,
Grandma steps in very snappily,
Q. learns Micah is his
And he’s loved as he is,
And we smile as it all ends up happily.

And just for fun, here's an ADULT excerpt from Hearts and Flour. Enjoy! : )

Excerpt ADULT: HEARTS AND FLOUR by Tara Lain; MM Contemporary; The Vegan and the Cupcake Baker

Available at Amazon  ARe

To Micah Truveen, raw, vegan food is his religion. So when his devoted customers show up with white flour cupcakes, Micah could kill. Then Micah comes home to find his boyfriend, Dharamaram, in bed with someone else. He throws the rat out and agrees to go to his friend’s orgiastic anti-Valentines party where he meets a gorgeous cross-dressing guy who gives him a night to remember.

Southerner Quentin Darby wishes he could stop wearing women’s clothes. He so wants to live up to his grandmother’s glowing opinion of him, he’s never even told her he’s gay. And now there’s Micah who makes him wish he could just be who he is. But Micah finds out that Quentin is the baker responsible for the plague of cupcakes afflicting the community! And Dharmaram adds a little blackmail to the mix. Can two hearts rise above the flour?
He tightened his grip on Queen and pulled him to the hallway. The hall made a turn, and Micah bumped into a guy leaning against the wall while another guy deep throated his cock. Transfixed, he stared at the cock disappearing into that wet mouth and then reappearing all shiny and dripping. Both men moaned and mewled as they worked. Micah’s balls tightened and black dots floated in front of his eyes. It felt like he was getting the blowjob. Could a human be this turned on and survive?
He looked at Queen who stared just as fixedly with a little smile on his lips. His blue eyes flicked up to Micah’s. “Do you like that?”
“Hell yes.”
“My, so do I. Want me to blow you?”
Keeerap. In twenty-six years of being gay, he’d never gotten such a direct invitation. “Yes.”
Queen smiled like he’d just asked Micah to a garden party. He pulled on Micah’s hand, skirted past the very involved couple, and peeked into the first bedroom they came to.
“Unh, unh, unh. Oh baby.”
Queen looked up and smiled. “No privacy there.”
The next bedroom door was closed and locked. They looked into the third and found six guys on a king-size bed all sucking on each other. Micah trembled. If he stuck his hands in his pants and jerked off nobody would even care. Except maybe Queen.
The beautiful guy stepped in front of Micah and pushed him against a closed door at the end of the hall. “This place is busier than a billy goat’s ass in a pepper patch. Looks like we don’t get privacy, sugah.” Queen dropped to his knees, ripped down the zipper in Micah’s jeans, and had his throbbing, straining cock out of its hidey-hole and into his mouth on the count of three.
“Holy shit!”
“Ummmm.” Queen sucked like a pool cleaner. Oh. My. God. No way Micah could last more than a second. Never, never had he received head like this. Those red-painted lips left pink stains on his cock as it slipped in and out of Queen’s mouth. His tongue caressed the head and tickled the frenum as those lips did a vacuum move on Micah’s shaft. Oh God, never let it stop.
But no. He didn’t want to come like this. He knew what he’d been missing and, damn, he wanted it. He ran his hands through Queen’s silky hair. “Wait. Wait. Can I fuck you? I’ve got condoms and lube.”
Queen’s blue eyes looked up. He popped Micah’s cock from that fantastic mouth. “Most gentlemen seem to prefer oral.”
“Yeah, well I’d really love to fuck you if you’re into it. Otherwise, suck me and then I’ll suck you.”
Queen stood up, smoothing the red dress over a very prominent bulge. “You certain?”
Jeez. Why did he want to explain? Micah pressed both hands to either side of Queen’s beautiful face. “I don’t know if you care, but I’m not promiscuous. I’ve been with one guy for a year and before that was a long dry spell. I just came to this party because he cheated on me and we split. I was pissed off and wanted to do something stupid. But the idea of fucking you is about the sexiest, most incredible thing I’ve ever thought of. If you’ll have me.”
Queen smiled. “And you’re about the sweetest thing I ever did see. In case you care, I’ve never been to one of Yancy’s parties before. I’m new in town and mostly just wanted to wear my dress somewhere safe. But I think getting fucked by you, darlin’, would be the best thing ever.”

Writing the Mom You Want

Hi everyone--

Happy Mother's Day! Sadly, i don't have many moms in my life. My mom and my husband's mother have been dead for many years now. When my mother was alive, she was a unique character and i took care of her for more than 25 years after my father died. So today, i'm sending cards to friends who have kids, but i'm also celebrating the moms that i've created in my books.

I write a lot of families in my stories. I guess because my childhood was problematic, the families i write are often really great parents who inspire me. Here is a scene from The Scientist and the Supermodel in which Jake Martin and his brother Cal get advice from their mother, Lydia.
********************

His brother leaned his elbows on his knees with his shaggy head hanging. “How should I do it, Roan?” Clearly, he was turning to the one with experience.
Roan smiled. “Take a deep breath and say it.”
“I’m gay.”
His mom wrapped her arm across the broad back. “Yes, dear, and what’s making you so unhappy?”
He twisted his head sideways and looked at her quizzically. “I just told you I’m gay.”
“Yes, darling, but you’ve always been gay, and you’ve never been so unhappy before. So what’s wrong?”
Jake couldn’t help it. He laughed.
He got a stern look from Lydia for his trouble. “Jake, this isn’t a laughing matter.”
“Mom, he’s been beating himself up over the fact that he’s never told you and Dad that he’s gay. And you already seem to know it.”
“Well, I’m his mother, for crap’s sake.”
Jake laughed again. Lydia only swore under pressure.
Caleb looked up at his dad. “Did you know too, Dad?”
His dad shifted a little in his chair. He wasn’t entirely comfortable talking about his kid’s sexuality, hetero or homo, and had often ducked “those” discussions, leaving them to their mom. “Well, your mom and I talked about it once or twice, and I agreed that you seemed most comfortable that way. I worried that you might get discriminated against, but you gotta be true to who you are.”
Cal turned back to his mom. “How’d you know?”
“I’m more interested in talking about what’s troubling you, Caleb.”
“Just tell me, and then I’ll tell you.”
“You were always more interested in boys than girls. And besides, your nature is the closest to Jake’s.”
“What the fuck?” Jake pushed away from the wall.
“Jacob!”
“What do you mean by that, Mother?”
She looked at him as if he had just asked the strangest question. As if he should know. “Jacob, you’ve always been bisexual. When I first noticed it, I read a lot and came to understand you better.”
He spread his hands, aghast. “How could you know this when I didn’t?”
Again she gave him the amazed look. “Didn’t? Jake, Tom was your lover for over a year.”
Jake felt like she’d slapped him. “Not exactly.”
“I’m no expert on homosexual practice, dear, but I know happiness when I see it, and you were much happier with Tom than with any of the girls you dated during that time. And now you have Roan.” She smiled at the beautiful man. The mask was back. Jake wanted to escape. Run. Leave the house, the world. Shit, what was going on?
Lydia continued like her middle son wasn’t melting down. “Right now I want to know why you’re not happy, Caleb. What made you get so drunk it took three men to get you home?”
“Charlie left me.”
“Your roommate?”
“My lover.”
“Ah. Well, dear, Charlie is a nice boy.”
“He said I didn’t love him because I wouldn’t come out and tell people he was my boyfriend.”
“And is that true?”
“Yeah, I didn’t tell you or my coach or the team.”
“No, I mean is he right that you didn’t love him?”
Cal looked stunned at the thought. He cocked his head and stared at his mother. “Sure I did, uh, do. I thought I did.”
“I’m certainly not trying to talk you out of your love, Caleb, but why did you hide it? If you were proud of your relationship, wouldn’t you have told us?”
“Shit, I don’t know.”
“You and Charlie have been friends a while now. If you thought it was serious, don’t you think you would have found a way to tell your family?”
“I really liked having somebody close by to fu -- uh, have sex with.”
“Well dear, having regular sex is a happy thing, not to be sneezed at. But I’ve met Charlie a few times, and while I like him as your friend, I think he may not be destined to be your life partner. He’s young. Maybe it’s appropriate that he get some more experience on this earth before he settles down. Meanwhile, you look for a relationship that offers you more of what Jake and Roan have.” She smiled at Roan, who seemed to want to run as badly as Jake. “As for telling people you’re gay, I think you define being gay, not the other way around. You’re six feet four, you like broccoli, and you prefer to have sex with men. What’s to hide?”
Caleb grabbed his mother and hugged her until Jake feared for her respiration. Jake felt like he’d been kicked in the head.

So many people have emailed to tell me they love Lydia Martin. I do too. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms in our lives. : )

Z.A. Maxfield Introduces GRIME AND PUNISHMENT with Something for You!

Hi everyone--
Today, it's my delight to welcome my good friend and inspiration, Z.A. Maxfield, back to the blog. ZAM and i were just at RT, did a bunch of workshops together, and i doubt that she's recovered either! But we're both thrilled about her new release, Grime and Punishment. This is the start of a new series, so get it quick! PLUS, if you leave a comment with your email, you can win any book of ZAM's INCLUDING this new release.

Grime and Punishment by Z.A. Maxfield

The Brothers Grime is Jack Masterson’s way of helping people in crisis after disability ends his career as a firefighter. Jack’s people get to a scene long after the physical trauma ends. They don’t solve crime or rescue the victims. They help people move on. The new job is all Jack wants or needs, until he gets the call about old flame Nick Foasberg’s suicide.

Ryan Halloran’s cousin Nick has been on a downhill slide for a long time. Despite that, Ryan does everything he knows to help. Ryan only understands part of what happened between Nick and Jack in high school, but after Nick’s suicide, Ryan agrees both he and Jack need closure. They work together to clean the scene and despite the situation, heat flares between them.

Jack is keeping a painful secret and fighting his attraction to Nick’s look-alike cousin, Ryan. Ryan calls himself a magnet for lost causes and worries Jack might be the next in a long line of losers. Despite his misgivings, despite the past and the mistakes they’ve both made, Jack gives Ryan something to look forward to, and Ryan gives Jack a reason to stop looking back, in Grime And Punishment.

Excerpt:

Jack couldn’t say exactly how he ended up sitting at Dave Huntley’s mother’s kitchen table, drinking coffee from delicate, gold-embossed teacups. When she brought out a bag of shortbread cookies and turned the whole thing into a teddy bear picnic, he pinched himself discreetly.

Because he didn’t want to think about Nick, his thoughts settled on Dave.

This is where Dave comes from.

This explains so much.

Karen’s voice interrupted his thoughts. “What Jack is saying, I think, is that while you might be able to clean the room yourself, it might be better—emotionally speaking—to have a third party come in.”

Ryan slid a glance Jack’s way. “Is that what Jack is saying? That I might be emotionally scarred by cleaning my cousin’s blood from the tub, and he won’t?”

She bit her full lower lip. “Jack, I believe what Ryan is saying is he’s worried—”

“I heard him.” Jack sighed. I’ll have to ask Dave if his mom is a marriage counselor. “We both knew the deceased.”

The phone rang, and Karen left them alone while she answered it.

For a couple of minutes, silence consumed them. Jack heard the number on the stove clock flip over from 10:56 to 10:57. Then 10:58.

“Why are you here?” Ryan finally asked.

“To bid the job like everyone else.”

“Right.” Ryan’s tone of voice indicated he didn’t buy it. He’d wrapped his arms around himself.

Jack put his cup into the saucer none too gently, then pushed it away. “Christ. I should not be using something as fragile as that.”

Ryan’s lips curved into a faint smile. “They’re pretty, though.”

God. Pale skin, pale brows. Freckles dusted the bridge of his nose and were scattered by the thousands over his forearms where he’d pushed up his sleeves.

Eyes the lightest shade of blue, like shadows in the snow.

Ryan was so like Nick. Yet…they were as individual as snowflakes.

Where Nick Foasberg had been built brutal in the way of Irishmen with the blood of Vikings in them, Ryan had softer edges. He was all lean muscle mass and just as tall as Nick, but he wasn’t keen like Nick had been. He wasn’t sharp or hard.

Ryan’s body language said he had nothing to prove.

He was intelligent. That much was clear. Was he a Foasberg? Or a cousin with a different name?

Jack said, “Look, you don’t know me, but—”

“I know of you.” Ryan’s gaze locked with his. “I know what Nick did to you. I was there.”

Jack’s heart dropped like an elevator with a broken cable. “You—”

“I know he humiliated you. How he and his friends beat you.” His gaze was searching. “What did you think would happen when you asked him to senior prom publicly, when you made a circus out of it so everyone knew you had a thing for him?”

Jack’s heart contracted. “I don’t know.”

I didn’t expect my best friend—who was also my fucking lover, goddamn it—and six other assholes to beat the hell out of me. I didn’t expect I’d barely escape being sodomized with a broom handle because someone called the cops.

No, sir. I did not expect that.

What's "Too Gay"?

Hi everyone--

I'm home from RT, exhausted, but happy with the fun and success of the trip! As you know, we did the first ever MM romance panel at RT. In preparation, it got me thinking about all the reasons that woman do love MM romance and why i love writing it.

It's interesting. Certainly gay men are as diverse and varied as straight men. Maybe more so. And yet, books with gay heroes often seem to me to be stories of two straight guys who happen to be boyfriends. In other words, they're two alpha, straight-guy heroes who have sex. That's certainly possible and okay with me, but at the same time, writing gay romance allows me to explore characters who are not pure alpha males. I know gay guys who are as flamboyant as drag queens, those that might as well be your straight uncle Charlie, and everything in between. I like exploring that diversity in my books.

Many of my heroes bend gender. Like Rodney in Fire Balls who is tiny, has pink hair and six earrings but is a black belt in karate and a total alpha male at heart. Or JJ in Snow Balls who is big, hunky, and looks like a football player but is, in fact, more queen than quarterback. Mark in Sinders and Ash can pass as a woman in couture clothes and Quentin in Hearts and Flour is a cross-dresser. Are these guys "too gay" to appeal to woman? My readers say no.

And what on earth is "too gay"? Here is my pal Davey Wavey commenting on that very subject. Enjoy. And thank you for coming by.
